Elizabeth and Peter Schumacher

Mary Hogan Delaney

Mary Ellen Hogan, daughter of Michael Hogan and Bridget Meagher came to Aurora to teach school at Toll Gate.  Miss Hogan's mother and Mrs. Bridgit Delaney were 1st cousins, their mothers Elizabeth Powell Meagher and Temperance Powell Gully were sisters.  Mary Ellen Hogan ended up marrying John Delaney, Jr. After her marriage she invited her cousin, Elizabeth Clifford to come to Aurora to take her place as the teacher.  Elizabeth Clifford was the daughter of Patrick J.Clifford and Mary Anne Meagher.   Elizabeth eventually married John H.  Read more »

Possibly Sedalia or Franktown School, Douglas County, ca. 1917-18

Hazel Kullgren (one of Olive's sisters) taught at the Sedalia and Franktown Schools in the 'teens, and later at a school in Denver.  Hazel is mentioned in this capacity in several newspaper articles of the time.  I thought this picture from Olive's collection could therefore be Hazel's school, but Hazel is not in this picture.    The 1917-18 Colorado Educational Directory mentions Hazel and another woman, Gwendolyn Curtis, as the two teachers at the Sedalia school that year.  Read more »
